Southern Oregon University is a small liberal arts college located in the southern end of Ashland, Oregon. The school has around 5,500 undergraduates and another 500 in their graduate program. Their theater arts program is very popular because the Oregon Shakespeare Festival recruits actors and actresses directly out of the program. The plays at the University are high quality and would be considered professional on many standards – they are a great alternative for those looking at going to the Shakespeare Festival but timid about the high ticket prices.
Visiting the University should be a must-do on your itinerary while visiting Ashland, Oregon. The campus is beautifully landscaped and always full of students. There is a nice coffee shop inside the new library (completed in 2007) and they open the large windows up in the late spring and summer.
Southern Oregon University is also well-known for their tremendous Outdoor Program. Due to the numerous outdoor opportunities the area offers, it is only fitting that the school would draw outdoor-minded students. The program runs lots of whitewater rafting trips on the Rogue River, mountaineering trips to Mt. McGloughlin, and backcountry skiing trips to Mt. Ashland.
